Food for Thought: The Folly of Criticism

by Ardith Hoff

“Steven Curtis Chapman has earned more awards than any other Christian vocalist in history, yet he acknowledges the sting of criticism never goes away. He has said what other recording artists have also expressed, ‘One thousand compliments plus one criticism equals one criticism.’” Between Heaven & The Real World, Steven Curtis Chapman, 2017, p.182

Criticism causes universal hurt, so let’s be careful! It is far too easy to criticize others while not noticing our own faults. “For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.” James 3:2

When we ourselves are being criticized it is helpful to remember that if we can learn to take it in stride, with some genuine reflection on how we can use it as a basis for improvement, we can come to realize that criticism can actually be a gift.

It can also be an act of kindness to help someone else learn how they can improve, but we must remember the difference between constructive and destructive criticism, and that there is a caring way to approach building someone up so that they do not become defensive and unable to receive helpful suggestions. Mary Kay Ash has suggested that we, "Sandwich criticism between two layers of praise." This is especially important when we are dealing with children and impressionable young adults.

Before we criticize the younger generation, let us first remember who raised (or is raising) them. We all know that we need to discipline children kindly and with love! Praise them where possible and rebuke them only when necessary. We should not excuse their blunders, but help them acknowledge their mistakes, and make sure they understand how they can do better. In fact, we can discipline ourselves in a similar manner––not by beating ourselves up, but by learning how to do better.

“Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.” Proverbs 10:17

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 81
