Food for Thought: The Hierarchy of Happiness
by Ardith Hoff
Our feelings range on a continuum from depressed to exuberant. On any given day, in whatever circumstances we find ourselves, we can be anywhere from extremely sad to exceedingly joyful, agitated to peaceful.
Most of the time, we tend to be in control of our emotions and can respond appropriately to whatever comes our way. Other times we have little power over tears or laughter that come to us unbidden. When we find ourselves grieving over a loss, or seeing or hearing something funny, we cry or laugh spontaneously. This is normal human behavior. However, when times of sadness last beyond a few days, we tend to get discouraged and feel like we might never feel joy again.
The third Monday in January is deemed "Blue Monday" and is supposedly the gloomiest day of the year. The calculated date is derived from weather conditions, holiday debts and regrets, unsuccessful New Year's resolutions, and other dreary circumstances. In truth, it was whipped up in 2005 as a scheme to market summer vacations and has since been used to market anything that might make us feel better. However, it does serve as a reminder that many around us, regardless of the date, are discouraged and need our help. USAToday.com, 1/17/19
For some people, sadness can reach a stage of clinical depression that calls for medical intervention. For others it may just be a temporary slump that a kind word or new perspective can alleviate. For other people it may be a feeling of hopelessness that requires a fresh start. If we turn to the Lord, He is always our best hope of finding the equilibrium we seek.
“My grace is all you need, for my power is greatest when you are weak. I am most happy, then, to be proud of my weaknesses, in order to feel the protection of Christ's power over me” 2 Corinthians 12:9
“But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles; they will run and not get weary.” Isaiah 40:31
“Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times” Romans 12:12
