Who we are
The Viroqua United Methodist Church welcomes all with open hearts, open minds, and open doors. We are a community of believers who exist for the purpose of carrying out Christ’s great commission by enabling all who come to personally know the joy of God’s love and forgiveness and to lovingly share this joy in the fellowship of the church and in reaching people throughout the world.
The Viroqua Methodist Episcopal Church had its beginnings in Viroqua in 1848. The organization of the Viroqua church took place in a grove one mile east of Viroqua with nine families present. The first building was erected on our present site in 1856. This building was destroyed by a tornado in 1865. The second building was erected in 1866. General Rusk donated a 500 point bell which is still in use today. That building was used until it was razed in 1888 to build the brick structure which in use today. The present building was built in 1914 at a cost of $24,567. A distinguishing feature is a large stained glass window of Jesus with the children. An educational wing was added to the building in 1960. Other building features include a lift for handicapped accessibility and a 4 rank pipe organ which was rebuilt in 2011.
Our worship service is traditional in style. One can be involved in choir, women’s fellowship groups, book study groups, Bible study groups, or other volunteer activities. Our church is very involved in serving the community. The Community Bell Choir practices at our church. Kids’ Church School meets on Wednesday nights after school during the school year. A family supper time follows at 5:00 pm. Kids also meet following the children’s sermon on Sunday mornings.

What should I expect when I visit the Viroqua United Methodist Church?
There are no dress codes for coming to a church service at Viroqua UMC. Come casual or come dressed up – JUST COME!
There is a parking lot on the north side of the church. The entrance to the parking lot is on Center Street. You can also park on the streets around the church.
We are encouraging folks to use the big doors in the Center Street archway when attending services. The double doors of the education wing are also a main entrance and used during the week to access the office. Greeters are in the hallway on Sunday mornings and can answer any questions you might have.
The handicapped entrance and lift are located in the northwest corner of the building near the parking lot.
Ask anyone. We’re friendly. Greeters can guide you to the sanctuary. Ushers will give you a bulletin as you enter the sanctuary.
Our Sunday morning worship is a traditional style service. We use the United Methodist Hymnal and the Faith We Sing Songbook for traditional and more contemporary hymns. A pipe organ leads the music. A choir sings two or three Sundays a month and the kids sing on the last Sunday of the month.
Coffee and cookies are served in the chapel on Sunday mornings beginning about 9:45 AM. This is a good time to visit with one another.
Sunday School for school age children through 7th grade is held on Sunday mornings. Children come to worship with their families, and then leave for Sunday school after the Children’s Time.
Confirmation Classes are held for 8th grade students.
High school students meet together on a flexible schedule. They are involved with the life of the church by serving on committees and participating in worship services.
Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month. All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be a peace with one another are invited to the table. We alternate serving communion at the rail, by intinction, or in the pews. Gluten free is available.
